A Bitter Ale by Neoinean (PG-13) Fandom:HIGHLANDER Pairing: None mentioned Length: 29,338 Author on LJ: not known Author Website: Neoinean's Fanfic ProfileWhy this must be read: Written in a virtual season 6, with the premise that Modern Prometheus was the last episode of season 5, and ignoring the last movie, this fic brings together Connor, Mac, Amanda, Richie, Joe, and Methos for a pre-Christmas get-together. During the course of conversation, Richie wants to know when each of them had their first taste of beer, which then descends into story-telling hour(s). Neoinean balances what each Immortal knows about each other pretty well, beginning with the assumption that Connor wouldn't know who Methos is and that not everyone is privy to the Horsemen reveal. When it comes to Methos' turn, he gives us a story that is bittersweet and yes, Horsemen oriented. What drew me to this is that this is a fic not just about the first time Methos had beer, but also about the Horsemen and why he left the Horsemen - and it's not because of Cassandra. More than that, Neoinean peppers the fic with examples of friendship between those gathered, such as how they all take an interest in Richie's college education. Warning, there is some character OOC'ness at certain parts that might bother you, but the story itself is well put together and a very nice read. It also references an earlier story in her 'verse but it is not necessary to read that to enjoy this. A Bitter Ale, with links to subsequent chapters |

The In-Between by Pepper (PG-13) Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH Pairing: None Length: 4,200~ Author on LJ: pepper_ckua Author Website: Her gen fiction, Her slash fiction Why this must be read: Because even though she’s written many, many stories in Starsky and Hutch, this is one of her early ones and still my all-time favourite. It’s the rhythm and poetry of it – unique to Pepper - it's the way she draws you in from the very opening paragraph (quoted below), to the moments of ‘the in-between’ that she then illustrates in the lives of Starsky, Hutch, Dobey, and original characters a case brings them into contact with. And all rounded off with a lovely touch of hurt/comfort. There is the time of in-between. In-between when the phone rings and when it is answered. In-between a toddler’s fall to the floor and the inevitable wail. In-between the pull of a trigger and the bullet meeting its target. In-between is the time one is awake and then falls over the edge into sleep, when possibility can make an unexpected turn. In-between the jump from the bridge and contact with the hard surface of water. In-between the time one sees a cop at the door and knowing in a few moments the bottom is going to fall out of your world. The in-between can be only a few seconds. Or a few minutes. Sometimes it can take up an entire lifetime. The In-Between |

Rules by Trollopfop (NC-17)
. Fandom: LIFE ON MARS Pairing: Sam Tyler/Gene Hunt Length: 1150 words Author on LJ: trollopfopAuthor Website: trollopfic Why this must be read:I’m always fascinated by stories that attempt a background for Gene, a reason for why he is the way he is and in this story Trollopfop does a great job of exploring the events that might shape, and even perhaps eventually damage, a relationship between Gene and Sam, events that have happened before they even meet. There are rules for clandestine buggery. No one ever lists them for you, but you learn them anyway, passed from one copper to another in a silent conspiracy of shame.Rules. |

Hellblazer/Supernatural (NC-17) Title: Finding Hell by Mayatawi Pairing: John Constantine/Dean Winchester Author on LJ: mayatawiAuthor Website: http://panthea.populli.net/Why this must be read: This fic isn't plot with porn, or porn with plot - it's both at the same time, weighed perfectly so that neither overpowers the other and nothing feels tacked on. At 25,000 words, the plot is well-realized and fitted to both characters and their originating canons, the crossover feels natural and unforced, and the porn - Well. The porn is really hot. finding hell |

Highlander/Supernatural (NC-17)
Last crossover rec from me this month... Title: Playing for Keeps Till the End of Time by Lacey McBain Pairing: Castiel/Dean Author on LJ: laceymcbainAuthor Website: Stickyman PressWhy this must be read: This is an example of what a good fusion should be. Lacey has brought the Supernatural characters into the Highlander 'verse, giving them roles that fit the Highlander world without losing what makes them Supernatural characters. While Dean is not a Hunter and Castiel is not an Angel, Lacey keeps them in character, using SPN characters for conflicts that are recognizably SPN conflicts even if they're cloaked in the Highlander mystique. Castiel takes over from Methos as the oldest Immortal who "watches" himself. Dean is a former Marine who is in town after the death of his brother Sam, a Watcher (though he's not aware of this.) He falls into the company of Castiel and through that, adventure and further drama unwinds. You don't really need to know anything about SPN in order to enjoy it, though it will probably enhance your enjoyment since you'll understand the various tensions between the characters, but Lacey does a pretty good job of making it enjoyable for fans of both series. Highlander/X-files (PG) Title: Warm Thoughts, by Sleeps with Coyotes Pairing: Methos/Alex Krycek Author on LJ: ciceqiAuthor Website: Blood, Love & RhetoricWhy this must be read: I don't actually know much about X-files, not being a fan of the series, but this is one of the fics I read when I want a pick-me-up. This is the story where Methos and Alex both decide to give up on their respective crushes. With humor woven throughout, Methos and Alex show an understanding and recognition of each other before deciding to give up on their respective crushes and try for something real with one another. Highlander/Torchwood (NC-17) Title: Pas de Trois Pairing: Methos/Jack Harkness/Ianto Jones Author on LJ: aeron_lanartAuthor Website: The GatewayWhy this must be read: A. Lanart's Mystery 'verse began as a way for Jack to learn how to be an immortal (lower case "i" intentionally.) and evolved into a complex universe that followed the Torchwood canon 'verse, with the addition of Methos. Unlike most fics that cross with Torchwood, Methos doesn't join Torchwood; instead, he visits periodically as friend and lover. It also turns out that Ianto used to be a Watcher, though is presumed dead at Canary Wharf - something that is tangentially important for one of the most sensual scenes in this. Pas de Trois is my favorite of the series and for something that is mostly a PWP, it also holds a lot more. This is the fic that starts the Ianto/Jack/Methos as lovers relationship. What is lovely about this, is the lovely complexity of emotion from all three. By this time, Jack has separate relationships with Methos and Ianto; the decision to add Ianto to the Jack/Methos relationship does not feel forced. You can read this without reading the rest of the 'verse, but the whole 'verse is well worth a read. I officially fail at life
I think maybe not trying will get me better results. 1) I am on my fourth ticket for my car's registration being expired. The first time I was going to go to the DMV, I realized I needed my birth certificate and could not find it. I ended up ordering a new one from the Delaware Records place. Then I paid off my car, so there is no longer a "lienholder" and I haven't received the title yet, so I still cannot register my car. 2) I am zero for many on free internet this week (CalTort Laurel failed me, Barnes & Noble failed me, the local library failed me, I was off from work, etc. I called CalTort Silver Spring to ask if they had wifi. They told me they did. I came to CalTort Silver Spring to order a delicious burrito and have some internets. No internets. This has resulted in me selling out to the AT&T wifi at Starbucks. Even though, starting tomorrow, I can call up Comcast and get real internets at my house. We're just not going to dwell on this. 3) I am not doing NaNo and I failed to sign up for Yuletide because...lack of internets. But! I am doing a Rossi/Prentiss Secret Santa exchange, because wojelah was kind enough to sign me up. 4) I am two episodes behind on Criminal Minds, four on Merlin, two on SPN, have acquired but not watched White Collar, and apparently Robert Patrick was on NCIS last week. Despite not having viewed ANY of these, I have seen all the episodes of NCIS:Gay at least 3 times. And have four thousand words of Sam/G. Although three of those words are [insert plot here] so who knows what kind of monster this one could end up being. I do not understand it. NCIS:Gay is possibly the worst written show since the 8th season of the X-Files, but apparently it completes me. I showed up for the Chris O'Donnell but Sam owns my heart. (And okay, I shipping Sam/G along with...the writers...but does anyone else want to see a little G/Nate? Even as a mechanism to get Sam and G together, or as some sort of angst-o-phile can't-have-who-we-really-want kind of thing. Seriously, if you can't write shallow cliche-fic about this show, what show can you?) 5) Tangential to the last two, my credit card number changed as part of a bank-wide safety precaution and so my auto-renew failed and can't be fixed until, well, now. Which is why I am not using the "I Give Up" icon. Because seriously, I would totally be giving up. Okay, well, at least that's fixed now. 6) I failed the bar. So the plan is kind of to take it again in February, even though it's probably not going to affect my career in the least. I finally got my score back in the mail - I got 370 out of 406 points. So...it's not like I was so close that it would be ridiculous NOT to take it again. But it's not like I failed it so hard that I can claim I really need the extra time to study. So I guess I'll just take it? IDEK. All it means is that ya'll get more whining. 7) I still do not own a house. I am waiting for a combined effort of the IRS and Sallie Mae, which means I will be settling in approximately 2050, when the dollar devalues to nothing. I'm sure I could go on but thta would get boring and seven is a nice, prime number. Current Mood: defeatedCurrent Music: something 80s |

Displacement by FayJay (NC-17) Fandom: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Pairing: Faith/Willow Length: One-shot Author on LJ: pandarusAuthor Website: Unknown, but here is her post of all fics. Why this must be read: This fic sums up everything I love about Faith/Willow. It's PWP but it's so much more than that - in this short space the author brings up everything that makes their relationship complicated, addictive, and ridiculously hot. For example it's pretty common to point out that Willow's girlfriend Kennedy has more than a passing resemblance to Faith but it's written so well here you can almost see the sparks between them in the car. Basically this is the hottest Faith/Willow I've ever read (and I would be lying if I said I hadn't read much)! ( Preview. NSFW. )Displacement |

It's a gorgeous day today. I want about thirty more days like this, all in a row. And they must all be Sundays, so I don't have to go to work. If any of you figure out how to bend space/time in this way, please let me know. Trudeau is at the vet's office getting neutered (hooray!), and at the vet's office there was a ridiculously adorable little blue kitten wandering around. Trudeau didn't eat it, and I was terribly proud of him. Meanwhile, I'm puttering around the house getting a few things done, oiling some tack that I have for sale (despite how nice it looks all oiled up, it will no doubt continue to not-sell; everybody's got tack for sale here as people are scrambling for money to buy hay for the winter). Yesterday when I was out in our little yard with Trudeau, I was considering digging in again to our garden, which I'm attempting to excavate (it's full of blackberry brambles and gravel) so that we can actually plant something back there. Unfortunately, I discovered that the job has doubled while I wasn't looking... not because the brambles have grown, but because apparently one of our neighbors has helpfully dumped their own cut brambles and weeds over the fence and into our yard. So where I used to have a fairly manageable space that I was chipping away at, I now have a brush pile. I would weep a little, if it wasn't Sunday. (Oh, Sunday. I love you.) Instead, I'm going to finish up here, then spend the rest of the daylight working with the horses and waiting for the vet to call to tell me Trudeau's ready to come home. Then I'm gonna see if I can train him to haul brambles out of the yard. He needs to earn his keep. |

Transgress by takhallus (NC17) Fandom: HEROES Pairing: Luke Campbell/Sylar Length: 1155 Author on LJ: takhallus Author Website: Master Fic List Why this must be read: Transgress is a response to a community challenge on lukexsylar and goes into the dynamic between Sylar and Luke. It's unapologetic angst but in the end also very romantic and it shows exactly what fans of this pairing sees in them - exploring their dependence on each other and the power balance. It's also a very in depth character study of Luke while still using few words and letting the readers figure him out themselves. The writing is very beautifully paced and always building until the ending. It's a tear-jerker and a story I could return to again and again. ( Excerpt ) Transgress |

Question for FList: Wii Fit Plus
I have a question for my FList: Can anyone tell me about the Wii Fit Plus? Is it any good? I ask because I have a a couple of exercise DVDs, but the problem is that whenever I use them I'm never sure if I'm doing it right, so I wind up being hesitant to use them, especially the Yoga one. From what I can see, the peripherals that come with it seem to give you some guidance on that score, which is actually what I need. So, any of you out there who's used the Wii Fit or owns it, drop me a line and tell me about it. The good, the bad, and the ugly. Gracias. Current Mood: curious |

At Least It Would Seem That We Don't by Derryere (NC-17) Fandom: MERLIN Pairing: Arthur/Merlin Length: 16k Author on LJ: derryereAuthor Website: Fic List on LJWhy this must be read:Another kinkme_merlin fic that is so much more than just the regular brilliant porn. The basic prompt was: "Arthur/Merlin, reincarnation, one time they get re-born as brothers." and true to kinkmeme standards there is a lot of sex, but it's the emotional connection, the gut-wrenching, transgressive force of their love that makes the reader come back for more. This fic isn't happy fun-times, what with the two boys being brothers. derryere puts the characters through emotional hell and it pays off magnificently. Don't miss out on this gem of a story. HEROES/JERICHO (R) Title: What Miracle Is Wrought by Cerebel Pairing: Mohinder Suresh/Sylar Author on LJ: cerebel Author Website: cerebel_fics Why this must be read: cerebel tells a complicated, heart wrenching story using the sparsest of fragments and the cross between Jericho and Heroes is genius. I can't think of a more fitting match. This post-acopalyptic verse is a world where abilities are important and morality needs to be pushed in order to survive, a world where people like Elle and Sylar are more than monsters - and just the idea of the people of Jericho having them on their side through their trials is amazing. . Title: One in Every Port by dorcas_gustine, Meeting of Minds by bistokids and Old Habits Die Hard by dorcas_gustinePairing: Sam Tyler/Bodie (OIEP), Sam Tyler/Ray Doyle (MOM) and Bodie/Sam Tyler/Ray Doyle & Sam Tyler/Gene Hunt (OHDH). Length: 4302 words (OIEP), 5000 words (MOM) and 10,192 words (OHDH) Authors on LJ: dorcas_gustine & bistokidsAuthors Website: List of Bistokids’ fiction posted to lifein1973, List of Dorcas Gustine’s fiction posted to lifein1973Why this must be read:Crossovers can often seem very contrived as meetings are forced between characters that would probably never have “naturally” met without assistance from a crowbar wielding fan fiction writer. In this case, however, the crossover seems quite orgasmic organic. Life On Mars is, in part, a detective show set in 1973 Manchester. The Professionals was a show about an elite “police force” (CI5) that was first shown on British television in the late ‘70s. While based in London, CI5 agents are shown operating all across the country. This series is a great example of what a team bunny raising can produce. BK requested Sam/Bodie from DG who then wrote One in Every Port.. BK then wrote Meeting of Minds in response to a bunny from DG. DG then rounded the whole thing out with her final response. Confused and baffled Sam is very confused and very baffled. Jealous Gene is exceedingly jealous. Sardonic Bodie is drily sardonic and considerate Doyle is just too sexy for Sam to look at directly. These stories dovetail together beautifully in a way that’s funny, extremely entertaining and rather deliciously naughty... Oh, and did I mention the handcuffs? *g* One in Every PortMeeting of MindsOld Habits Die Hard. |

BAND OF BROTHERS/SUPERNATURAL (R) Title: Free Until They Cut Me Down by newredshoes Pairing: ensemble gen Author on LJ: newredshoesAuthor Website: newredficWhy this must be read: This sprawling, beautiful Big Bang fic is a prime example of what a crossover should be. After a series of uncanny attacks, Private Dean Winchester, a new replacement joining Easy Company after Normandy, discovers that he may not have left his own war back on the home front after all. Newredshoes blends the two canons perfectly -- Dean is very recognizably himself, and flashbacks to his life leading up to the war show the choices that led him from hunting demons to joining the Airborne, and the consequences. The men of Easy Company are just as well drawn, particularly Babe, Winters, and Luz; the plot is intricate, tight, and rich in mythology. This fic works even if you're only familiar with one of the fandoms, so whether you're a fan of BoB, SPN, or just a damn good mystery, you should read this right now. The perfect gift for your internet friends!
Christmas! You might be having one soon. You might not be. You might be like me and be having a quasi-Christmas which involves the presenting of presents but no actual religious beliefs. You might be having another cultural or faith-based celebration around this same time of year which also includes the exchange of gifts, such as Chanukah or Kwanzaa, and be feeling justifiably cranky that your observance is often tacked on as an afterthought to Christmas, a kind of cultural equivalent to the "and with him, as always, is Garth" from Wayne's World. I always feel a bit wretched wishing people a "Happy Holidays", because it's like I'm saying "I wish you a Merry Christmas even though you don't celebrate Christmas at all, Merry or otherwise", and that's pretty shitty of me, even if it's a well-intentioned shittiness. There needs to be a way of saying "man, I hope this time of year doesn't suck for you, and that good stuff happens to you and the people you care about" without it being tangled up with potential awkwardness. Get on that, society! Still, however your Decembers might look, you probably know at least a couple of people that you're supposed to give delightful gifts to for one reason or another, right? And since you're on the internet, it's likely that some of the people you know are also on the internet. In fact, that might be where you know them from! They might be living on the OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD, in fact! It's crazy! What an age we live in, huh? If you're anything like me, this situation is complicated by the fact that being on the internet and being lazy go hand in hand rather neatly. There are people on the other side of the world who need to be given nice things by you, but the post box is all the way outside, and maybe even down the street! That's a long way to go! Shit! What are we going to do? Fear not! For here is the perfect solution to your terrible situation. You should buy your internet friends some e-books. You don't have to go anywhere! There are no shipping delays (did I ever tell you about the time I sent a friend a photo of LeVar Burton I took for her? I sent it October 19th, and she still doesn't have it. The mail service is not the reliable bastion of reliability that it should be!) or wrapping-related traumas, or snooty salespeople, or pungent noisy crowds. Plus, these particular e-books are totally excellent and your internet friends will love them, I swear. Think how cool you'll feel when you get emails saying "wow, those books you sent me over the internet were totally great, friend! I have had an amazingly happy holidays and/or a fantastically merry christmas, and I owe it all to your astounding long-distance gift-giving skills! Hurrah for you!" Getting an email like that would feel pretty good, right? Yep, it sure would. So your course of action is clear: this December, choose life. Give your internet friends their very own copies of The Wolf House books one and two, and then settle back and enjoy the gratitude they heap upon you for it. |
